Habitat-specific bacterial communities along the urbanised coastal environment

Özet

This study seeks to examine the diversity and community compositions of planktonic and biofilm-associated bacteria along the heavily urbanised coasts of Istanbul, focusing on the Bosphorus and Sea of Marmara. For this purpose, the benthic and pelagic samples were collected from 12 sites in June 2023, and the bacterial communities were investigated, for the first time in this region, by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing using MinION technology. Bacterial communities differed distinctly between pelagic and benthic habitats, with no significant overlap in community composition. Pelagic communities exhibited lower diversity compared to benthic communities. Candidatus Pelagibacter dominated the pelagic communities, whereas Yoonia members were Planktomarina found in all benthic samples. nMDS analysis and PERMANOVA analyses confirmed a clear separation between benthic and pelagic communities with habitat type as the primary driver of bacterial community differences, while no significant spatial variation was detected between sites. Redundancy analysis revealed that benthic and pelagic communities were each associated with different sets of environmental variables; both were structured by two groups of factors, nutrient content and physicochemical characteristics of water. Among environmental drivers, Chl-a and SiO2 were the major physicochemical parameters shaping bacterial community composition in both habitats.
