Evelyn Grill's novel Vanitas oder Hoftstdters Begierden chooses a naration by making extracts from works of art. The intermedial allusion plays a constitutive role in terms of constructing the meaning of the novel rather than an embellishment and a component of visualization in the text. The names of the paintings, statues, installations, dramas, lyrics, poems and artists, which are extracted an alluded, are also used to foreshadow the events as well describing the appearances and moods of the figures. The intermedial allusion focuses on the motive of the vanity which is the main theme of the novel.
