Özet

The Mediterranean is home to 6% of all known marine species with its rich biodiversity. Turkey, as a part of the Mediterranean Basin is also remarkable for its rich marine biodiversity. But this wealth is under threat for many human-induced reasons, such as pollution, extreme and illegal fishing, and some of these problems are triggered by increasing effects of the climate change. Establishing marine protected areas is one of the mechanisms to manage human activities and ultimately reduce the associated pressures on the environment. Turkey as of 1990s, became party to Conventions and started to adopt new policies to protect coastal and marine biodiversity, one of which is establishment of Protected Areas on the coasts and Specially Protected Marine Areas along Mediterranean. In this article, we will focus on the Specially Protected Marine Areas in the Mediterranean and Turkey’s efforts to protect its marine biodiversity.
