Prestige of an Online Newspaper: The Decision of Future Journalists

Abstract

t In blog.radikal.com.tr, a news article was reported, named, ‘Old People’s Group Sex Party Went Wrong: 7 Dead,’ originating from internet sites; such as, nordpresse.be, forum. aufemini.com, and www.seneweb.com. The Turkish version of the news reported initially by blog.radikal.com.tr was used by some online Turkish newspapers, in order of click rate* hurriyet.com.tr, milliyet.com.tr, sozcu.com.tr, sabah.com.tr, stargazete.com.tr, radikal.com. tr, and t24.com.tr. Based on this particular case, this study’s aim is to measure the potential loss of prestige of the abovementioned news sites in the eyes of students and if there is any repercussion of the event on students’ willingness to work as a professional in these sites. In this study a survey trying to figure out those abovementioned questions was conducted on 41 news agency students. Then a focus group discussion was held with the students who want to work in an online newspaper to measure prestige of their future work area.
