Long-term effects of sessile oak (Quercus petrea, Matlusch, Lieb.) thinning on herbaceous understorey and oak seedlings

Abstract
A thinning experiment was conducted in a 58-year-old Sessile Oak (Quercus petrea (Matlusch) Lieb.) stand in 1992. The effects of thinning on herbaceous understory and naturally regenerated oak seedlings were studied 8 years after treatment in 2000. To examine responses to thinning, above ground biomass, organic matter and total nitrogen content of herbaceous understory; density, height growth, foliage total nitrogen and organic matter concentrations of oak seedlings were measured for three different thinning intensities [control 2180 trees/ha 31.30 m2 ha–1 basal area, moderate thinning 1100 trees/ha 24.35 m2 ha–1 basal area and heavy thinning 800 trees/ha 11.50 m2 ha–1 basal area remained after treatment] and the results compared to uncut-control plot.
