Abstract
The Eastern Mediterranean has been one of the regions where political, commercial and cultural interactions have been most intense throughout history. In this geographical setting, the spheres of influence of states such as the Byzantine Empire, Umayyads, Abbasids, Seljuks, Crusader states, Mongols and Anatolian principalities were not limited to land borders; sea routes, port cities and island geography also became important elements of this struggle. Cyprus, in particular, due to its geopolitical position, was considered one of the key points of dominance in the Eastern Mediterranean dominance throughout the Middle Ages and also deeply influenced political developments in the region. With the start of the Crusades, Cyprus became the first logistical base for the Crusader armies setting out from Europe towards the East. In 1191, King Richard I of England seized the island and immediately transferred it to the Lusignan dynasty, transforming Cyprus into a permanent centre of power governed by an institutionalised monarchy from the Crusaders' perspective. Meanwhile, the Mongol invasion of Anatolia in the 13th century weakened the Seljuk Empire, and the collapse of political authority led to the emergence of numerous Anatolian principalities. These principalities, engaged in political power struggles within their regions, established relations with the Kingdom of Cyprus, sometimes on the basis of hostility, sometimes on the basis of trade and diplomacy. This study aims to examine the political structure of the Eastern Mediterranean after the Crusades and the Mongol invasion, within the context of the relations between the Anatolian Beyliks and the Kingdom of Cyprus. The main objective of the research is to present the military, political, diplomatic, commercial and cultural interactions that took place between Anatolia and Cyprus during this period in a chronological context, thereby systematising the scattered information found in the literature.
