Beyond Risk Severity: Within-Person Organization of Suicide-Related Risk Indicators Among University Students

Abstract
Emerging adulthood is a developmental period characterized by heightened vulnerability to suicidal ideation. This study examined overall levels and patterns of relative dominance among suicide-related indicators (defeat, entrapment, self-critical rumination, ignored, and excluded) according to gender, living arrangements, and socioeconomic status (SES) among university students in T & uuml;rkiye. Participants comprised non-clinical students with (SI-Yes; N = 134) and without (SI-No; N = 271) past-year suicidal ideation. A mixed-design General Linear Model examined differences in overall risk and within-person patterns. Among the SI-Yes group, males showed greater prominence of interpersonal indicators, particularly ignored, whereas females showed greater prominence of defeat, entrapment, and self-critical rumination. Living arrangements differentiated overall risk only among males, while lower SES was associated with higher overall risk levels but not relative organization. No significant differences emerged within the SI-No group. These findings suggest that patterns of relative dominance may offer additional insight into suicide-related risk during emerging adulthood.
