Özet
The concept of epigenetics was first introduced by Conrad Waddington in 1942. Epigenetics, considered “above genetics,” encompasses modifications that do not alter the DNA sequence but affect the function and regulation of DNA, proteins, and RNAs, especially in biological processes and disease development where purely genetic explanations are insufficient. While controlling genetically driven diseases is often challenging, it has become possible to modulate cancer, a major contemporary health issue, through epigenetic alterations. The aim of this review is to summarize the current knowledge regarding key epigenetic mechanisms—including DNA methylation, histone modifications, and the extensively studied non-coding RNAs, particularly microRNAs— and their roles in cancer development and progression.
