Özet

Due to the growing internalization of English and its increased use as a Lingua Franca (ELF), there is a surge in inquiries and discussions concerning the pedagogy of the English language. The aim of this qualitative study is to investigate from an ELF standpoint the beliefs, perceptions and teaching practices of English instructors working at the department of foreign languages of a private university in Istanbul. Data, gathered through semi-structured interviews with 25 teachers, underwent inductive analysis. The analysis of the data revealed teachers' perceptions and beliefs regarding ELF, as well as the implications of ELF in their pedagogical practices. Emerging from these perceptions and beliefs is the concept of interculturality which reveals an essentialist mindset underlying EFL teachers’ approach to the culture-related issues in their practices. Participating in the EUREDIE Summer School as an Early Career Researcher (ECR) has cultivated a critical understanding of culture and interculturality, and provided me with a theoretical basis and some practical means of investigating these two concepts. The experience has led me on a journey of exploration into how EFL teachers perceive and navigate cultural perspectives through the lens of ELF perceptions, beliefs and practices in language education, and guided me in enriching the discussion section of this study where the main focus was not on interculturality
