Since the Ottoman Empire did not have rich deposits of precious metals, the precious metals needed by the mints for minting coins had to be supplied largely from the market. This necessity necessitated the organization of different professional groups within the framework of the purchasing system of the Imperial Mint. Numerous professional groups were obliged to provide this institution with inputs consisting of different forms of precious metals. The focus of this study is on m & uuml;bayaac & imath;-zahireci (purchasing agents ofthe Imperial Mint for gold and silver), kalc & imath;-ifrazc & imath; (silver refiners) within the mentioned groups. The aim of the study is to overcome the difficulties encountered in defining these occupational groups, to determine what kind of work they were engaged in, to enter the profession and the code of practice.
