Abstract

Introduction: Sleep disorders are commonly underdiagnosed and are a significant source of concern in the geriatric population. We aimed to assess the frequency of sleep disorders in elders older than age 75.

Methods: 203 patients older than 75 years of age were included to the study. All subjects were assessed for sleep problems, REM sleep behavior disorder (REM SBD) and Restless Legs Syndrome (Johns Hopkins severity scale).

Results: Females were 136 (67%) and males were 67 (33%) of 203 patients. Table 1 shows the frequency of components of sleep disorders. 35% of patients were having at least 1 finding of REM SBD and 33% of patients were having restless legs syndrome. 97% of patients said ‘yes’ at least one of these questions: Do you think your sleeping time is enough? Is there any difficulties in falling into sleep? Do you involuntary wake up early?

Conclusion: We observed that sleep disorders are not rare in elders. It could affect quality of life negatively. Sleep problems should be examined and considered to treatment in elderly population.
