Apoptosis is an essential and physiological pathway for life. However in some cases apoptosis may lead to devastating reactions threatening life. Enhanced apoptosis is observed in many cicumstances such as diseases, chronic and acute ilnesses, major trauma and burn patients. Enhanced apoptosis is detected at both wound site and distant tissues in burn patients. This enhancement of apoptosis can be named as pathological in someway since hypertrophic scar formation, local and systemic inflammatory reactions leading prolonged wound healing are the most common results. Special efforts is required to enlighten the apoptotic pathway and its consequences for better burn wound recovery.
