The present work aims to explore the soundscapes that emerged from the travelogues by some European women writers at the end of the 19th century. Borrowing from theories on soundscapes, we will take as a reference the text by the Italian Elisa Cappelli, In Svezia. Impressioni di viaggio. Libro per la gioventù(1902) and compare it with other travel reports of the period written by women. From four categories of sound—natural, mechanical sounds, voice, and silence—, the concert of geophonies, biophonies, and anthrophonies that characterize a remote Nordic soundscape highlights ‘enchanting’ or ‘sublime’ natural landscapes, where the sound mixture contributes to outline the ‘good citizen’ and their typical restraint. These features shed light on the coeval imagerie culturelleof this large geographical area.
