Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a defining feature of contemporary societies, performing tasks that require human cognition at a pace far beyond that of conventional methods. As technological advancement increasingly shapes transformations in social life, engagement with AI has become a disciplinary imperative for social scientists. This study examines the academic reflections of AI within Turkish social sciences, and sociology in particular, through descriptive bibliometric and qualitative content analysis methods. The dataset comprises 375 postgraduate theses selected from the YÖK Thesis Database using the keyword "artificial intelligence," ten of which were produced in sociology departments. Consistent with global trends, 2018 constitutes a critical inflection point in academic output. Sociology's participation in AI research has been limited and delayed, accounting for only 1.4% of the total. Content analysis of the 1,640 references across the 10 sociology theses reveals that Western theoretical references are dominant at 54.3%, reflecting a high degree of conceptual dependency. Citations to Turkish authors remain largely technical and definitional, while Zygmunt Bauman and Ulrich Beck are the most frequently cited foreign theorists. AI is predominantly positioned as an object of analysis, most often associated with "risk society," "digitalization," and "alienation," with only two studies treating it as a social actor. Although two doctoral theses stand out for introducing original concepts, the overall pattern is applicative and adaptive. The study argues that Turkish sociology must move beyond its cautious and distanced stance toward AI and adopt a more critical and conceptually productive engagement.
