Protecting the social and economic rights of workers, one of the main motivations for the establishment of unions, is an important goal of strike activities. This study analyzed the effect of gross domestic product (GDP) and inflation (among other social and economic indicators) on strikes. The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds test, an econometric time series method, was used in the study. The dependent variable of the model was the number of lost working days representing strike activities, and the independent variables were per capita real GDP and consumer price index (CPI), representing inflation. The findings of the study suggest that there is a long-term relationship between the variables at a 95% confidence level. According to the long-term coefficients, a 1% increase in real GDP per capita increases the number of working days lost to strikes by 1.043%, whereas a 1% increase in inflation increases the number of working days lost to strikes by 0.982%. The full logarithmic model indicates that the real GDP per capita has a slightly stronger effect on strikes.
