REVIEW OF MANAGERIAL SCIENCE, 2025 (SSCI)
This study systematically reviews the literature on the impact of innovation on firm survival, aiming to synthesize existing knowledge and identify future research directions. We assess 73 articles published between 1990 and 2022 using the TCCM framework to evaluate theory, context, characteristics, and methodology. Our findings reveal that the field is predominantly grounded in economics-oriented theories (e.g., RBV, evolutionary theory), and focuses on product innovation in manufacturing industries from developed economies. Moreover, research in this area heavily relies on public records data and econometric models to track firm survival. These contextual, conceptual, and methodological limitations highlight the need for multiple dynamic theoretical perspectives, greater exploration of emerging economies, healthcare industry, patient innovation, further clarification of innovation-firm survival relationships and constructs, and consideration of more flexible and non-economic indicators of firm survival. Finally, we offer methodological recommendations to improve data validity, incorporate time-varying covariates, and apply advanced methods such as fsQCA in future research.
