Abstract
Security of a single individual and its right to li
ve with dignity in a society beyond the
restrictions of ‘constructed threats of the nationa
l states’ came to agenda after the post Cold War
environment. Conflicts spread in this environment a
nd get out of the control of state intervention and
receive insufficient reaction, which have influence
d the theoretical production of emancipation
concept in the critical security approaches. Furthe
rmore, regional conflicts, poverty, abuse of women
as a vehicle of war, environmental derogation, are
all left out from state based security studies.
Individual restrictions of the statecentered analy
ses have induced the scholars to interrogate fear
created by the state. After the Cold War, identity
policies have turned into crucial phenomenon for th
e
states and perceived as an issue of national securi
ty. Classical ‘problem solving’ approach has
analyzed minority rights in this environment.
The aim of this study is to look at the theoretical
evaluation of identity concept in security
studies and to analyze, compare and contrast the st
ate based security approach and critical approach
especially with regards to minority policies and id
entity issues in the age of multiculturalism.
