Özet

SUMMARY: To date, there have been many reports and studies showing the increased rates of antidepressant use that appear to be unexplainable by a parallel increase in mental illness rates and patient populations. The literature also contains studies where this phenomenon, characterized by “uninformed, undue, uncontrolled and/or off-label use of antidepressants by a considerable portion of clinicians and the general public”, was conceptualized as “antidepressant use disorder” (AUD) based on the transition observed in time between the related concepts in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association) and International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (World Health Organization). This paper explains how this conceptualization was made and provides an example of the various psychological, social, and clinical mechanisms that lead to AUD.
