This study aims to examine the authorial consciousness reflected in the works of Maecheon Hwang Hyeon (1855–1910), an intellectual and writer active during the late Joseon and Daehan Empire period. Hwang produced numerous Chinese poems and historical writings, most notably the Maecheon yarok (梅泉野錄), in which he documented turbulent historical events and expressed the patriotic awareness of an intellectual facing national crisis. This paper analyzes Hwang’s historical consciousness in the Maecheon yarok and his social awareness revealed in his poetry, focusing on his literary perspective and sense of authorial responsibility. The Maecheon yarok combines factual accuracy with a patriotic historical viewpoint, testifying to foreign invasions and the development of nationalist movements. His poetry, encompassing patriotic, rural, and landscape themes, demonstrates a spirit of social engagement. Hwang further emphasized a critical inheritance of tradition and creative renewal responsive to the demands of his time, thereby underscoring individuality and the social role of the writer. His works, particularly the Final Poems written at the time of national ruin, embody the ethical practice of an uncompromising intellectual and serve as an important indicator of the literary character of Korea’s transition to modernity. By providing an integrated perspective on Hwang’s works, this study re-evaluates the historical significance and national value of his literature and thought.
