Abstract

This chapter explores the systemic and cultural barriers that perpetuate the gender gap in academia and professional settings, with a specific focus on women's access to leadership roles. Utilizing the frameworks of Feminist Institutionalism and Poststructuralist Feminism, it examines how formal structures, such as tenure and promotion policies, and informal practices, including male-dominated networks, sustain gender inequities. The chapter highlights the interplay between structural inequities and societal norms, presenting examples of successful reforms and practices aimed at reducing these barriers. Strategies for fostering gender equity, such as redefining leadership norms, implementing structural reforms, and promoting inclusive mentorship, are proposed. By integrating theoretical insights with practical solutions, this chapter advocates for systemic and cultural transformation to create inclusive and diverse professional environments.
