Insights into palaeoglacier and palaeoclimate dynamics in northeastern Türkiye during the Last Glacial Maximum

Özet
Glaciers in mountainous regions respond rapidly to climatic shifts and therefore provide valuable records of past environmental conditions, particularly where instrumental climate data are lacking. One such region is northeastern Türkiye, where well-preserved glacial landforms reflect the imprint of past climatic conditions (Akçar et all. 2007; Akçar et all. 2008; Reber et all. 2014). This study reconstructs the extent and thickness of Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) glaciers in the Eastern Black Sea Mountains of northeastern Türkiye by mapping landforms and estimating paleo-equilibrium line altitudes (pELAs). The PalaeoIce model developed by Li (2023) was used for palaeoglacier reconstructions, and the ELA calculation tool introduced by Pellitero et al. was applied for equilibrium-line altitude estimations. Field observations combined with geomorphological analyses revealed glacial features in 224 valleys, indicating a much wider distribution than previously reported.
