Özet
Although the increased incidence of dementia after stroke is well-recognized and up to 60% of stroke survivors experience some degree of cognitive impairment in their 1st year after stroke, 1 the relationship between cognitive impairment and a TIA has been less well defined. In the large longitudinal population-based Oxford Vascular Study, the incidence of dementia at 1 year was 5.2% after a TIA, 8.2% after a minor stroke, and 34.2% after a severe stroke.2 Similarly, in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Community study, the risk of incident dementia increased almost twofold (hazard ratio [HR] 1.96) in patients with a TIA, and the risk remained elevated (HR 1.67) even after excluding those with subsequent stroke from the analysis.3 However, a nested longitudinal cohort study from the Framingham Heart Study with follow-up over 20 years (median 8.7 years) did not find a difference in the risk of developing of dementia between patients with TIA and matched controls.4
