**The paper discusses the specific characteristics and challenges involved in teaching the history of Polish literature in Polish Studies programmes outside Poland, particularly in the context of teaching Polish as a foreign language. The aim of the presentation is to highlight the tension between the traditional, chronological model of literary instruction and the need to adapt it to the diverse linguistic and cultural competences of students.
Drawing on teaching experience at Istanbul University, the paper presents the most common difficulties encountered in practice, including the lack of appropriate teaching materials, limited class time, difficulties in interpreting canonical texts, and differences in the understanding of historical contexts. It also proposes practical solutions, such as the use of adapted text excerpts, multimedia materials, cultural comparatistics, and translation-based strategies.
The paper seeks to initiate a discussion on the place of literary history within glottodidactic curricula and on the role of the instructor as a mediator between literary tradition and the contemporary reader.**
