TURKIYE ILETISIM ARASTIRMALARI DERGISI-TURKISH REVIEW OF COMMUNICATION STUDIES, sa.49, 2026 (ESCI)

Özet

While the online environment is associated with freedom of expression, it also brings self-censorship. In this study, Warner and Wang's (2019) "self-censorship" scale and Marder et al.'s (2016) "security concerns towards groups" scale were combined and adapted into Turkish to obtain comprehensive data on the reasons for self-censorship. In the study, 227 academics from communication faculties in Turkey participated. According to the results of the study, as perceived vulnerability increases, both privacy concerns and self-censorship due to these concerns rise. A negative correlation was found between information management and privacy concerns. While it was found that women were more concerned about followers, academic title, and type of institution (public or foundation university) were not determinative. In addition, in the horizontal plane, there is a high level of concern about the access of unknown people. After unknown people, the highest concern is concentrated on administrators and students.
