CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF SERUM IL-17 LEVELS IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS WITH PNEUMONIA

Abstract
The article presents information regarding a research study aimed at investigating the alterations in the concentration of IL-17 in the blood serum of children with pneumonia. The study included 60 patients aged 0-16 years who were receiving inpatient treatment for pneumonia (main group) and 20 healthy children (control group). The purpose of the study was to investigate changes in the concentration of IL-17 in the blood serum of children with pneumonia. The level of IL-17 in the blood serum of both patient and control groups was determined and compared. It was found that serum IL-17 levels in the patient group were significantly higher compared to the control group (p<0,001). Patients diagnosed with pneumonia were radiologically divided into three groups: 30 with focal pneumonia, 19 with lobar pneumonia and 11 with segmental pneumonia. Based on disease severity, more severe progression was recorded in the lobar pneumonia group and IL-17 level in this group were higher than in the segmental and focal pneumonia groups. Pneumonia patients were divided into age groups-above and below 6 years and their serum IL-17 levels were compared and no statistically significant difference was found between the age groups (p<0,63). In conclusion, IL-17 an inflammatory cytokine, was found to be significantly elevated in the serum of pneumonia patients compared to the healthy group and its levels increased in proportion to the depth of the inflammatory process in the lung tissue.
