Abstract

Monomers of trans and cis-stilbene were isolated in solid argon and xenon and their
infrared spectra in these environments fully assigned. The interpretation of the vibrational
spectra received support from theoretical calculations undertaken at the DFT level of theory
with the 6-311++G** basis set. Annealing of the matrices allowed identification of
characteristic spectral features due to dimers of the compounds.
The UV-induced isomerization of the compounds was also investigated. Cis-stilbene
was found to convert to the trans isomer, which is produced primarily in a distorted (nonplanar)
configuration and, upon subsequent annealing, relaxes to the most stable planar form.
On the other hand, trans-stilbene was found to be photostable under the used experimental
conditions.
