Evidence-Based Practices Performed by Midwives in Turkey: A Systematic Review
Objective: Evidence-based follow up practices and health care that is presented to pregnant, mother and newborn during prenatal, birth and postnatal period yield rather positive results with regard to both care givers and care takers. Our purpose is to systematically investigate
195
the evidence-based practices performed by midwives in Turkey, and to establish the results of the studies on such evidence-based practices. Material and Methods: Systematic review included 493 articles published between 2000 and 2015 that were screened in the “Google Academic” data base with the key word of “evidence based practices in midwifery” after excluding patents and references. Of these articles, three evidence-based studies that are consistent with research criteria and conducted by the nurses and midwives in Turkey constituted the sampling of the review.
Findings: Gökduman et. al. (2010) reported that a quarter of the mothers received education on use of herbal tea to increase mother milk production during the first six months of delivery, and 57% of the subjects who used herbal tea stated that their milk supply was increased. Gökduman et. al. (2013) found that of all mothers who performed traditional practices for increasing mother milk, 52.1% of the mothers who had a 0 to 6 month-ol-infant received proper training, and 47.9% practiced traditional modalities. Bilgin et. al. (2016) reported that those who received uterine massage during postpartum period perceived less postpartum pain.
Result: Evidence-based studies conducted by midwives, who play a role as caregivers for pregnant, mother and newborn during these crucial periods, are scarce in number, however reviewed studies revealed that the evidence-based practices bear a positive effect on newborn and mother care. It is suggested that in order to increase evidence-based practices by midwives, both clinically-practicing midwives and midwives who attend post graduate-doctorate training should conduct researches on this topic and transfer these findings into practice.
