Abstract
The basins of western Turkey record the multi-stage kinematic evolution of the Aegean Extensional Province and host significant geothermal resources. The & Ccedil;& uuml;r & uuml;ksu and Ac & imath;g & ouml;l basins are situated at the junction of three major graben systems of the region, and remain relatively understudied. The gravity method is widely applied to delineate basin geometry, faults, sediment thickness, and the approximate densities of sediments and basement rocks. In this study, vertical-component gravity data from the & Ccedil;& uuml;r & uuml;ksu and Ac & imath;g & ouml;l basins were interpreted using 3D modeling. The recovered models suggest basin depths up to approximately 3 km and reveal several NNE trending, nearly perpendicular lineations that appear to subdivide the study area into smaller blocks than previously recognized. These lineations cut across the basins and extend beyond them, and are therefore interpreted as possible faults. Seismicity located north of the basins, beyond the E-W boundary faults, is scattered around these NNE oriented features.
