Cutaneous anthrax and fever: In the emergency department

Özet
Anthrax is a zoonosis produced by Bacillus anthracis. It has typically three forms of infection: cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and respiratory. Cutaneous is the most common one. Anthrax is a public health problem in several developing countries whose main source of profit is farming. Anthrax is a disease affecting herbivorous animals, and humans can be infected by handling infected animals or contaminated animal products. In this manuscript, we describe the case of a 56 year old male patient who was admitted to the emergency department (ED) with left arm swelling, bruising and rash. He is farmer and works outdoor. In his history, four days before the illness he vaccinated a cow. He complained such as malaise, myalgias and painless ulcerated necrotic erupsion on the left arm. Bacillus anthracis was positively identified in a liquid smear on his left arm erupsion. As a result, cutaneous anthrax (CA) should be considered in differential diagnosis in cases presenting with painless ulcers, vesicles or eschars with a recent history of exposure to animals or animal products.
