Since the early 1990s, there has been a significant increase in the number of text linguistic analyses and comparisons of academic text types. Various text types, including research articles, abstracts, scientific papers, and reviews, are analyzed and compared in different languages. These studies focus to compare English-language academic texts with texts from other languages, such as German, French, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Finnish, and Norwegian. There have been several comparative studies conducted between German and other languages, such as German-French, German-Finnish, German-Russian, and German-Italian. However, there are only a few intercultural comparisons of academic texts between Turkish and other languages. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how text linguistic and contrastive analyses can improve the text type competence of young academics, including masters and doctoral students. Firstly, this paper provides an overview of comparative analyses of academic texts. Then, it presents how text linguistic analyses and intercultural comparisons can improve the ability of PhD students and young academics to produce academic texts in their native and foreign languages, based on the PhD program of the Departments of German Studies and Linguistics at Istanbul University. Through contrastive analysis, young scholars can become more aware of the differences between languages and their effects on text generation. This can enhance their proficiency in academic discourse and different text types across multiple languages, ultimately contributing to their success in international academic communication.
