Aims: The rate of psychiatric disorders in cancer patients have been reported as 29-47%. In this study we aimed to evaluate the level of anxiety and factors related with this level of anxiety in lung cancer patients. Material and Method: Sixty three patients who were receiving cancer treatment were questioned about sociodemographic features such as age, occupation, educational status, residing place (city, town, village) and the patients knowledge about the disease. Then State and Trait Anxiety Inventory, STAI I-II was performed and level of anxiety was measured. Results: There were no significant relation between state and trait anxiety levels and age, gender, occupation, residing place, histopathological diagnosis (p>0.05). Educational status was significantly related with state and trait anxiety levels (p<0.05). There were no significant differences between the state anxiety levels of the patients who knows the diagnosis and who do not (p=0.121). The difference was significant for trait anxiety levels (p<0.05). Conclusion: State anxiety levels were higher and trait anxiety levels were significantly lower in patients who know the diagnosis. We suggest that the patients with adequate sociocultural level can be informed about the diagnosis, and psychiatric counseling can be demanded while giving this information.
