Abstract:

The main objective of the study is to examine whether individual investors residing in Istanbul have the psychological biases and tendencies suggested by behavioral finance. These biases and tendencies include representativeness, overconfidence, overoptimism, overreaction, underreaction, loss aversion, preference for the familiar, regret avoidance and herd behavior. In the application part of the study, biases and tendencies are considered as dependent variables. At the same time, it is analyzed how these variables differ among individual investors. Within the scope of the study, 504 individual investors living in Istanbul were surveyed and the data obtained were analyzed with SPSS 25.0 statistical program. The results of the analysis reveal the relationship between the demographic characteristics of the participants (gender, marital status, age, employment status, education level, income level and investment instruments) and their financial preferences
