Özet:
MASCULINITY, NATIONALISM, MILITARY SERVICE:
THE EXAMPLE OF EKSI SOZLUK
DOGA MELİS ZEYBEK
In terms of patriarchal gender relations, masculinities are knitted together with nationalism, the founding ideology of modern states. Compulsory military service, on the other hand, is a nationalist practice that refers to male citizens. Military service is critical in terms of the meaning of nationalism, which cannot separated from patriarchy. Economic-social conditions led to the diversification of military service. The military experience, in which masculinities and nationalism are raised together, is a powerful experience that reinforces individuals’ identity processes ans makes them question their identities. Entries in Eksi Sozluk under the titles of “Masculinity” between 2000-2021 and “Nationalism” and “Military service” between 2015-2021 were examined, and the meanings of these three concepts fort the commonality, neoliberal transformations and gender relations were investigated.
