Abstract:

The Cretan question emerged in 1866 by an uprising of Christian Cretans against Ottoman rule and in a short time gained an international dimension. The struggle for taking over the control of the island between the Ottoman Empire and Greece led to the intervention of imperial powers namely England, France, Russia, and Italy. This process culminated in the annexation of Crete by Greece in 1913 and caused great unrest in Turkish public opinion. In this master?s thesis I examine the Cretan question and particularly focused on the Turkish public opinion and reactions to the Greek annexation of Crete. I examine the annexation process step by step in chronological order and look at the Turkish reactions to the important events happened between the years 1866 and 1913. The Cretan question is one of the highly neglected subjects in Turkish historiography. This thesis I believe makes contribution at some level to the field but naturally it requires further studies.
