Biography

Murat Şentürk is a sociologist of urban studies and a professor at Istanbul University. He received Bachelor degree from Faculty of Communication, and a Sociology MA [Life Strategies of the Indigent: The Districts of Küçük Mustafa Paşa and Balat (Istanbul) as Cases in Point] and a Ph.D. [Urban Intervention in The City of Istanbul] from Istanbul University, Department of Sociology. In 2013, he was Visiting Scholar at the City University of New York, The Graduate Center (Center for Place Culture and Politics). In the 2022-2023 academic year, he carried out his research titled "Creating Inclusive and Resilient Communities in the City by Volunteering", supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK), as a visiting scholar at the University of Sydney the School of Geosciences. He is the director of the Centre for Sociological Research, Urban Studies and the CSOs and Social Responsibility MA programme. The Volunteering Academy and Be Volunteer Istanbul were established by Şentürk and his friends at Istanbul University. His research interests include urban interventions and policies, new media and digital culture, civil society and volunteering, citizen engagement, and the sociology of ageing. He is the assistant editor-in-chief of the Istanbul University Journal of Sociology and the editor-in-chief of the Senectus. Supporting various CSOs and civil initiatives in the field of volunteering, Şentürk is currently an active volunteer and a board member of the Darülaceze Foundation and the Turkish Green Crescent Society. He is the editor of the book Volunteering and Working with Volunteers and conducted the Turkey Volunteering Research project. In 2021, he was awarded the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA)-Outstanding Young Scientist Award (GEBİP). His research projects are supported by TÜBA, TÜBİTAK, the UN, and the EU. Şentürk's current research focuses on the relationship between local governments and volunteering.
