Polar Research Group
The Polar Research Group, which aims to promote the interdisciplinary scientific exchange of information on the Arctic and Antarctic, serves an international community of researchers.
Polar research in Turkey is carried out especially by the Polar Research Institute (KARE) of the TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center. KARE organizes scientific research and expeditions in the Antarctic and Arctic regions and promotes scientific studies with these expeditions and fulfills our country's responsibilities and obligations towards international organizations. The Polar Research Group, established to bring the scientific research of the Istanbul University, Marine Sciences and Management Institute in the Arctic and Antarctic regions to more collaborations, was organized openly for international researchers to examine the environmental and social impacts of these regions. The group aims to conduct studies aimed at understanding the changes in the polar regions and the effects of these changes worldwide and to promote the interdisciplinary scientific exchange of information. Understanding and modeling the physical oceanographic dynamics of polar seas is of great importance in understanding the effects of the poles and seas on climate change, and research on the first stages of the food chain in polar regions is also of great importance in understanding sustainable ecosystem dynamics. It is obvious that phytoplankton species to be isolated from the region may have alternative solutions for the needs of developed societies and will open the door to important technological developments. In addition, it is thought that the Polar Research Group will undertake a leading platform for conducting research on the poles specifically for the Blue Economy or Blue Growth concepts, which can be summarized as meeting products and services from the seas as an alternative to terrestrial consumer goods.
