Biography
Barbara Dell'Abate Çelebi is an associate professor of
English and Italian literature. She is currently working in the Department of
Italian Language and Literature at Istanbul University. She holds a BA and MA
in Modern Western Languages and Literatures (English and French) from the University
of Naples L'Orientale and a Ph.D. in
Italian Literature from the University of Istanbul. She has taught English,
Italian, and French literature in various universities, among which Beykent
University, Koç University, Galatasaray University, and Université Libre de
Bruxelles. She is the author of Penelope's
daughters (2016), La letteratura in
gioco (2016) and L'alieno dentro
(2011).
Her research interests, rooted in comparative literature by women, focus on issues of power, agency, and gender politics. Since 2019, she has been working on Western women traveling to the Ottoman Empire and on Ottoman women writers. She published in June 2022 the article “Fatma Aliye: At the intersection of secular and Islamic feminism” in Women’s Studies (AHCI/Q3) and in July 2025 "Nezihe Muhiddin and the Struggle for Women's Franchise. The Defeat of Feminism by Nationalism in Early Republican Turkey” in Nations and Nationalism (SSCI/Q1). She is particularly interested in researching lesser-known Late Ottoman Empire women intellectuals and their feminism avant la lettre. She has lived in Turkey since 1998 and can speak and write fluently in Italian (mother-tongue), English, French and Turkish.
