Biography
M. Selim Yavuz received his bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering from Sabancı University. He then completed a non-thesis master's degree in historical musicology from the Istanbul Technical University Center for Advanced Music Research (MİAM) with a project on John Dowland and his religious works. He then moved to the United Kingdom to complete a master's degree in ethnomusicology at the University of London, Royal Holloway. His thesis was on depressive suicidal black metal and how this style of metal deals with death-related themes. He received his PhD in musicology from Leeds Beckett University on the genealogy of death/doom metal in Northern England. During his PhD, he worked as a research assistant in the Sport and Leisure Studies department and as a lecturer in the Music and Sound department at the same university. After completing his PhD, he returned to Turkey and worked as a lecturer in the Sociology department of the Faculty of Arts and Letters at Yeditepe University for one year. Since February 2021, he has been working as an assistant professor in the General Musicology Department of the Musicology Department of the State Conservatory of Istanbul University.
Yavuz's research interests include extreme metal music cultures, music sociology, relational sociology, social network analysis, digital musicology, and critical theory.
