Aquatic Food Safety and Pollution Research Group

Our research group, established within the Faculty of Aquatic Sciences at Istanbul University, operates with a multidisciplinary approach to studying the effects of microplastics, toxic metals, and similar pollutants in aquatic organisms consumed as food.

As the AQUAPOLL research group, we aim to develop innovative and multidisciplinary approaches to solving food safety issues. Our research areas focus on environmental pollution, aquatic food quality control, microplastic pollution, and the use of bioindicator species in monitoring environmental contamination. Within the scope of our studies:

  • In terms of food security, we investigate the effects of microplastics, toxic metals, and similar contaminants in aquatic food species and assess their risks to food safety.
  • Through controlled exposure studies conducted in laboratory conditions, we examine the impacts of environmental stress factors.
  • By carrying out environmental sampling studies in various regions, we evaluate pollution levels in aquatic food products and their potential risks to consumers.

These studies contribute to advancing fundamental scientific knowledge while also providing concrete solutions for the sustainable management of environmental and aquatic resources and ensuring food safety.
